About this journal.

Welcome! Thank you for viewing my "psycho-journal". This section contains important information for those considering to go on reading.

I am a psychiatrist, immigrated to the USA from Ukraine in 2004. I completed my medical education at the National Medical University in Kiev, Ukraine in 1999. As of December 2006, the time of this writing, I am in the midst of preparation for the USMLE Step 2 exam, with the goal of getting into a residency program in psychiatry in 2008. I am very fortunate to have a job at a local psychiatric hospital, so while preparing for my examinations I have an excellent opportunity to see the real-life psychiatry in this country with my own eyes.

I am not particularly happy with the current state of affairs in American psychiatry. And yet, I elect to become a psychiatrist here, even though there are other medical specialties I could choose. This is primarily because I hope that it will allow me to not only talk about the situation, but actually do something about it. I also hope that my different medical and cultural background will help me raise and solve the issues that normally go unnoticed by the Americans.

This journal is intended to be the first step in this process of actually doing something. I know it will not do much, but if my writings help at least one person reconsider their views about psychiatry, or be able to communicate with their doctors more efficiently, my efforts will be justified.

This journal is primarily aimed at mental health professionals who are ready to challenge and discuss the limitations of the current trends in psychiatry, as well as their advantages. But the journal is open to everyone. It could also be a good way for the patients to keep in touch with me while maintaining their confidentiality, since the open contact after hospitalization is prohibited by my employment guidelines. I often do not have enough time to talk to people while at work, so this could be a place to further explore the issues raised in our conversations.

This is intended to be a place of coherent discussion. I have neither time nor energy to engage in endless flame-type one-line arguments. All comments that I deem obscene, unethical, or not contributing to the discussion will be deleted at my sole discretion.

My goal is not to criticize or minimize the achievements of the modern psychiatry. It is to communicate my understanding of the big picture. I am not promoting anyone's point of view, nor am I saying that I know anything. I am an agnostic who uses his life experience and common sense to analyze and interpret the facts that he encounters.

If this all still looks interesting to you, please be my guest, or even my friend. Your comments and thoughts will be welcome.

Yours,
sk
